Palestinian Local Elections Set October 20

Palestinian government in the West Bank on Tuesday (10/7) set October 20 as the new date for long-delayed elections, the first since 2006, said officials.
Tuesday the decision was taken a week after the Hamas rulers to stop the electoral registration efforts in Gaza.

Election is a broad decision reconciliation agreement aimed at ending five years the two governments. Fatah in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza.

"The Palestinian government on Tuesday decided to hold local elections, town and district on Oct. 20 in the entire territory of Palestine," says Palestinian official, who declined to be named, told AFP.

The election was originally scheduled for July 9, but after the surprise reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas movements, the date was put back to October 22.

Both parties intend to agree on an independent interim government, to guide the implementation of the Palestinian elections, but the ongoing disagreements over forming a government bogged down in the implementation of the agreement.

In July 2011, the Palestinian government in the West Bank said the local elections scheduled for October could not be held in Gaza, and Hamas accused hamper preparations voting.
